Jay Lin, founder of Portico Media, established GagaOOLala in 2017. In a recent interview with Jennifer Huang, Director of the Taiwan FactCheck Education Foundation (TFC), Jay shared his vision for founding GagaOOLala. He stated that the platform's origin began with the organization of queer film festivals, aiming to meet the urgent and unmet demand for authentic LGBTQ+ content within the Asian market.

To date, GagaOOLala boasts 5 million members, and Jay's ambitious goal is to double this membership within two years. He has successfully positioned GagaOOLala as the "Gay Netflix" to expand awareness of the services the platform provides. During the process of channel agency, Jay discovered that while U.S. media conglomerates had produced a large volume of LGBTQ+-related series, this content continued to face stringent censorship in the Asian market. He expressed that his initial intent for entering the industry was to positively influence and contribute to the LGBT community, emphasizing that "Diversity is the core value of our company."

Following three successful years of the film festival, Jay received strong feedback from internet users across Southeast Asia urging the introduction of more queer films. He pointed out that in the past, LGBTQ+ visuals were virtually invisible in cinemas and on television. With the rise of streaming platforms, GagaOOLala is now able to deliver content via its app to 13 Southeast Asian countries, granting wider audiences access to these productions.

Jay noted that with the advancement of LGBTQ+ equality, an increasing number of Boys' Love (BL) series are now able to give voice to the community and convey positive emotions through their narratives. He highlighted that approximately 250 BL titles are produced annually. In Thailand, BL dramas broadcast on the GMM network during prime time (8 PM and 9 PM slots) achieve very high viewership ratings. Furthermore, despite South Korea being a traditionally Christian country where same-sex marriage is not yet legalized, it has also produced a significant amount of popular queer content. Jay stressed, "Amidst this trend, the most popular content on GagaOOLala is also BL series."

In addition to its video content, GagaOOLala recently launched the blog Gala+, which features in-depth articles designed to allow audiences to explore the content more deeply. Jay stated that the platform will continue to seek suitable content in the future and is considering co-investing in or assisting other creators to complete their projects. To date, GagaOOLala has produced 67 original works, including over 20 international co-productions. GagaOOLala's growth not only reflects market demand but also demonstrates strong support for the LGBT community, signifying a continued commitment to contributing to the development of diverse cultures.

Strategic Tie-in with Taiwan Pride: Showcasing Diverse Power through "A Window Into Taiwan: Taiwan Celebrates Pride"

As the first country in Asia to legalize same-sex marriage, Taiwan has long been recognized by international media—including the BBC, Reuters, The Guardian, and the Associated Press—as "East Asia's largest Pride march" and a "bastion of tolerance" for equality in Asia. Taiwan Pride attracts hundreds of thousands of participants annually, demonstrating the high degree of tolerance and liberal spirit within Taiwanese society, making it a focal point for the global LGBTQ+ community. GagaOOLala's "A Window Into Taiwan: Taiwan Celebrates Pride" online event, launched during Taiwan Pride month in October, is built upon this foundation of Taiwan's international LGBTQ+ influence. The campaign is closely aligned with the spirit of the Taiwan Pride celebration and conceptualizes the thriving LGBTQ+, BL (Boys' Love), and GL (Girls' Love) cultures in Taiwan as "a series of irregularly shaped windows," symbolizing diverse identities and perspectives.

This October, GagaOOLala is pleased to invite all of our beloved members and viewers to join us in our celebration of Taiwan Pride 2025 with our special campaign, “A Window Into Taiwan: Taiwan Celebrates Pride”, featuring an exclusive lineup of Taiwanese LGBTQ+, BL, and GL movies, series and shorts available on our platform.

As the first country in Asia to legalize same-sex marriage in 2019, Taiwan has long stood as a beacon of progress, equality and inclusion in the region. Every Pride season, Taiwan comes to life with vibrant celebrations of love, joy and shared solidarity with the iconic Taipei Pride in October to equally spirited parades in the cities of Taichung and Kaohsiung in November.

Inspired by the idea of irregularly shaped windows representing the many perspectives and identities within the community, “A Window Into Taiwan” campaign is an effort to showcase and celebrate Taiwan’s thriving LGBTQ+, BL and GL culture and the creative strength of its growing film and television industry.

To bring this celebration to life, the campaign features 3 special sections, each created in collaboration with three major partners, who have been instrumental in advancing Taiwan’s LGBTQ+ rights and acceptance and Taiwanese content both locally and globally.

You can explore all 3 special sections directly through the “Watch Now” links below, or scroll down to learn more about the stories and collaborations behind each.

Furthermore, for our free viewers, we have also added a section with a selection of 8 Taiwanese BL series that you can watch absolutely for free.
