There is a kind of exhaustion that cannot be cured by a single night’s sleep, and a kind of pain that cannot be healed by one good cry. At times like these, what we need may not be another dramatic twist, suspenseful cliffhanger, or sudden reversal. What we need is somewhere we can finally let our hearts rest.

Some BL series draw viewers in through more than plot alone. With gentle lighting, an unhurried rhythm, and the quiet care shared between their characters, they allow audiences to settle slowly into their worlds. Global LGBTQ+, BL and GL streaming platform GagaOOLala has curated a selection of healing BL series for everyone who needs a moment to breathe.

July 29 Finale: After Losing His First Love, Can Jun-jia Believe in Love Again?

Smile After Tears will reach its finale on July 29. In the series, optimistic and cheerful transfer student Jun-jia meets Xiao He, the lead singer of the school’s pop music club, at a club fair. After joining the band, Jun-jia gradually grows closer to Xiao He through music. Xiao He was born with a heart condition, but refuses to let anyone pity him.

A sudden accident forces the two apart, leaving Jun-jia overwhelmed by grief and longing for his first love. During the lowest point in his life, basketball player Diao-qin remains quietly by his side, appearing whenever Jun-jia needs someone most.

As the story enters its final chapter, can Jun-jia let go of his longing for Xiao He and begin facing his life again? How will he respond to Diao-qin’s enduring companionship and feelings? From tentative first love and sudden loss to allowing someone new to draw close, the emotions connecting the three characters are about to reach their most pivotal development in the finale.

Directed by Ping Chen Chiang, who previously co-directed See Your Love, the series stars Atom Boyz 2 alumni Yan-kai He, Jun-jia Zhang and Diao-qin Zheng. Ahead of the finale, the three leads reflected on their most memorable experiences during production. The series’ many emotionally demanding and tearful scenes presented major acting challenges for He and Zhang, while Zheng was deeply affected by the experience of joining a full production for an entire month for the first time.

Yan-kai He, who plays Xiao He, admitted:

“I don’t usually cry very often, but this series has many crying scenes. I practiced them repeatedly at home, and receiving recognition from the director and acting coach gave me a real sense of achievement.”

Jun-jia Zhang, taking on his first leading role, shared:

“The scene that stayed with me most was the confession scene with Xiao He. I needed to cry, and the director spent a lot of time guiding me into the right emotional state. He encouraged me to think about some of the frustrations I had carried inside, and in the end, I really did cry.”

Diao-qin Zheng, who joined a long-form drama production for the first time, said:

“Before this, I had mainly appeared in commercials or guest roles. This was my first time spending an entire month with a production crew. It required a great deal of stamina and concentration. It was a rare experience, and I am very grateful for the opportunity.”

The three actors followed their characters through first love, loss and personal growth. The genuine emotions they brought to the production have given the finale an even deeper sense of farewell and healing. Whether Jun-jia can finally turn around and see the person who has always remained beside him will be one of the finale’s most anticipated emotional answers.

Taiwanese BL Gains International Attention

As BL productions continue to emerge across Asia, Smile After Tears has distinguished itself through its fresh youthful energy and delicately healing emotional tone, becoming a Taiwanese BL hidden gem discovered by international viewers.

Since its premiere, the series has gradually gained momentum within international fan communities. It has also attracted overseas KOLs and content creators to travel to Taiwan to interview the three leading actors, while its official photobook has generated considerable interest among international fans.

This expanding attention, moving from the series itself to its cast and related merchandise, demonstrates that Taiwanese BL can still stand out in Asia’s vibrant and highly competitive market through sincere emotions and memorable characters, allowing more of the world to discover its distinctive appeal.

Selected Series: Gentle Stories That Are There to Catch You

A Winter Sun Wakes the Wind in Spring Hills’ Dream: Escape into the Mountains and Discover a Different Life

At the height of his career, superstar Feng Qinglang escapes the spotlight and retreats to a remote tea mountain, where he meets Xu Changyang, a free-spirited young tea farmer with an untamed soul.

One lives under the constant gaze of the public, while the other belongs to the forests and the land. Surrounded by tea fields, mountains and the rhythms of everyday life, the two gradually grow closer.

The natural scenery, gentle lighting and unhurried pacing create a warm, cinematic atmosphere. When someone is finally able to step away from the expectations of others, he can begin to reconsider the life he truly wants.

I Hear the Sunspot: Hearing the Sound of Love in the Silence

Adapted from the best-selling manga of the same name, the series centers on hearing loss, communication and companionship. Kohei, a university student who has gradually withdrawn from those around him because of his hearing impairment, meets the friendly and straightforward Taichi.

Taichi steps into Kohei’s lonely world, offering him a sense of understanding and support that he has not experienced in a long time.

Despite their differences in communication and personality, the two grow from helping and accompanying one another into a deeper emotional connection. Gentle cinematography, restrained emotions and natural everyday interactions allow love to be felt not only through words, but also through understanding and listening.

Stay By My Side After the Rain: Some Feelings Are Worth a Second Chance

A relationship that never had the chance to begin six years earlier is revived when two former high school friends reunite as adults.

Kanade Shinichiro, an office worker who has long hidden his sexuality, unexpectedly encounters his high school best friend, Mashiro Kosuke. Kanade once had unrequited feelings for Mashiro, but years later hears the confession he never expected: “Because I like you too.” The two must revisit the feelings they could not express during their school days, as well as the wounds each has carried since then. Through a mature and delicate perspective, the series explores reunion, understanding and reconciliation.

It reminds viewers that missing an opportunity does not always mean losing it forever. As long as we are willing to face ourselves honestly, it is never too late to begin again.

The power of healing BL does not lie in making us believe that the world is perfect. It lies in reminding us that even when life remains imperfect, somewhere late at night, in some quiet corner, a light may still be waiting for us.
