GagaOOLala Expands Korean BL Lineup with Five-Episode Twisted Tie and Vertical Dramas
Korean BL is finding new ways to reach audiences, from vertical dramas with episodes just minutes long to compact series such as GagaOOLala's latest addition, Twisted Tie, which tells its workplace romance in five episodes. At the same time, viewing momentum for Korean vertical BL continues to build.
Two weeks ago, Buddy Boy ranked No. 1 among GagaOOLala's vertical titles, with Painter of the Night at No. 2. The following week, football-themed Kick in Love and baseball BL Double Play took the top two positions respectively. The back-to-back performance suggests that Korean vertical BL is moving beyond isolated breakout titles and beginning to establish more consistent audience demand.
Korea's Mature Short-Form Viewing Habits Create Space for Mobile-First BL
Korean screen content has increasingly diversified into shorter and more flexible formats, with more productions also emerging in the mid-form range of approximately 30 minutes.
According to the Korea Creative Content Agency's 2025 Content Usage Behavior Survey, short-form video usage in Korea reached 58.6%. Among short-form users, 76% cited short running times and lower viewing commitment as a key reason for watching, while 47% said recommendation algorithms influenced their viewing. Among streaming-video users, 91.7% consume content via smartphones.
This mobile-led viewing environment provides favorable conditions for both short-run episodic series and vertical dramas built around episodes lasting approximately one to three minutes.
Korea's established webtoon ecosystem also provides a natural foundation for short-form adaptation. Webtoons are already structured around dense plotting, frequent narrative hooks and chapter-end cliffhangers designed to retain audiences. The live-action vertical adaptation of popular BL title Painter of the Night is one example of how established IP can move from digital comics into mobile-first screen storytelling.
Five-Episode Workplace BL Twisted Tie Joins the Lineup
GagaOOLala's latest Korean BL, Twisted Tie, runs for just five episodes and stars Go Tae-woon and Kim Do-hyun.
The series follows perfectionist manager Kang Do-jin, whose tightly controlled professional life begins to unravel after new employee Lee Seon-woo joins the company. Seon-woo's direct and sincere approach increasingly challenges Do-jin's attempts to maintain the boundaries of their superior-subordinate relationship.
When a client enters the dynamic, jealousy accelerates the shift between the two men. Rather than relying on a lengthy setup, the series quickly moves into workplace tension, attraction and emotional conflict.
Summertime Shows Longer-Form Korean BL Remains Part of the Mix
The growth of shorter and vertical BL does not mean conventional episodic formats are disappearing.
Recently completed Korean BL Summertime unfolds across 10 episodes, following Cha Do-hyun and Yeo Eun-ho, who have grown up together over the course of 19 years.
Produced by the team behind The Prosecutor's Proposal and starring Kim Do-min and Seong In-ho, the series develops its central relationship through long-standing attachment, jealousy and changes in the dynamics between the two characters.
Together, Summertime, Twisted Tie and GagaOOLala's vertical dramas show how Korean BL is experimenting with different episode counts and viewing formats.
Sports BL Takes the Lead as Vertical Storytelling Expands Beyond Youth Romance
Following the success of Buddy Boy, which combines youth drama, a love triangle and forbidden same-sex attraction, sports-themed stories have moved to the top of GagaOOLala's vertical BL rankings.
Kick in Love follows Seung-hyun, a promising football player whose career is interrupted by injury. With the support of rehabilitation therapist Ji-sung, he begins rebuilding his daily life while an online connection introduces an additional layer of romantic tension.
Double Play shifts the setting to a high-school baseball team facing possible dissolution. Catcher Jeong-ho and star pitcher Tae-hoon initially struggle to work together, but as their teamwork improves on the field, they gradually grow closer off the field.
With football and baseball stories taking the top two spots, GagaOOLala's latest rankings also show that vertical BL is finding room for sports narratives alongside more familiar romance settings.
Korean BL Expands Across Multiple Formats on GagaOOLala
GagaOOLala has recently expanded its Korean BL offering across multiple viewing formats, ranging from ultra-short vertical dramas to compact episodic series and more conventional full-length productions.
The subject matter is also becoming increasingly varied, moving beyond school and workplace romance into sports, supernatural concepts, AI, unconventional fantasy premises and crime-thriller elements.
