Korean vertical BL continues to gain momentum. Global LGBTQ+, BL and GL streaming platform GagaOOLala will premiere the new Korean vertical BL Painter of the Night on September 1. Adapted from a hit BL title with more than 100 million views, the series brings period drama, power, desire and forbidden passion into the vertical format.
The new release arrives as Korean BL titles post strong results on GagaOOLala’s latest vertical drama chart. Newly released I’d Rather Quit Than Die, Director! debuted at No. 1, drawing twice the views of second-place High School Boy, while Bad Kid Good Partner ranked third. Five Korean productions have entered the latest Top 10, spanning workplace romance, school life, the entertainment industry, sports and coming-of-age stories.
The momentum comes amid rapid growth in the global microdrama market. According to Sensor Tower, global short-drama app downloads surpassed 850 million in Q1 2026, up 140% year over year. By April 2026, users were spending an average of 25 minutes per day on short-drama apps, up 85% from January 2025 and gradually closing the gap with OTT streaming at around 35 minutes per day.
